Why Suffolk Homes See More Spiders in Autumn (and What to Do About It)
Every autumn, Suffolk homeowners notice the same thing: more spiders indoors, often larger ones, and often right around the time the weather starts to turn. It’s not your imagination, and it’s not usually a sign of anything wrong with your home. It’s simply the time of year when spiders are at their most visible.
Why September and October Are Peak Spider Season
Male house spiders reach maturity in late summer and spend autumn actively searching for a mate, which means they cover far more ground than usual, often wandering into houses through gaps under doors and around window frames. At the same time, cooling temperatures outdoors push spiders looking for insects, or simply somewhere warmer and drier, indoors. The combination of mating season and the change in weather is why sightings spike so noticeably at this time of year.
Are Suffolk’s Autumn Spiders Dangerous?
The vast majority of spiders found in UK homes, including the common house spider, are harmless. Bites are rare, and where they do happen the reaction is usually mild, similar to a bee sting or midge bite. NHS guidance on insect bites and stings covers when a reaction needs medical attention. Species that can give a more noticeable bite, such as false widow spiders, are found in the UK, but a proper identification is worth getting before assuming the worst.
Reducing Spiders in Your Home
- Seal gaps around doors, windows, and where pipes or cables enter the house
- Fit brush strips to external doors to close off a common entry point
- Reduce clutter in garages, lofts, and sheds where spiders like to hide undisturbed
- Vacuum regularly in corners, behind furniture, and around skirting boards to remove webs and egg sacs
- Outside lighting attracts the insects spiders feed on, so consider positioning lights away from entry points
